Professor Spencer DiScala, Ph.D.

Professor DiScala is the recipient of the 2007 National Excellence in Teaching Award given by the University Continuing Education Association and of the Association's New England Region 2006 Award for Innovative Pedagogy. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia University. He was awarded Fulbright Fellowships to Italy as a student and traveled extensively in Europe. He taught at the University of Kentucky and then at the University of Massachusetts Boston, where he is a full professor and Graduate Program Director in the History Department. Among other works, he has published three books on Italian Socialism, a book on European political thought, a book on modern Italy that was a selection of the History Book Club and has gone into several editions, and a history of Europe in the twentieth century: Twentieth Century Europe: Politics, Society, Culture. He has also published 200 articles in journals, newspapers, and encyclopedias. In 1983 he was named Senior Research Fellow in Rome and in 1997 Research Professor by the University of Massachusetts Boston. He currently serves on the editorial boards of several scholarly journals and edits a book series on Italian and Italian American Studies.
